CAT ANSWER 3

Question 3:  What is wrong with these cats?

Answer : They’ve all been declawed and have been affected adversely, to the point of displaying physical symptoms.

Because our shelter does not support declawing, we use every opportunity we can to educate the public about this horrific practice.  In cat orientation and training you will learn more about declawing and why we do not support it.  Hopefully you will join us in spreading awareness and helping to educate the public and potential adopters visiting our shelter.

In short, a cat’s nails don’t grow out of their flesh as humans’ nails, do.  They are instead an extension of the cat’s bone, so in order to declaw the cat, the bone is actually amputated.  Most cats show their pain through behavioral issues such as biting and litter box avoidance.  Most owners never make the connection that their poor kitty is living in excruciating pain every day.  Cats avoid displaying their pain until it is absolutely unbearable, as this is a survival technique.  Some cats are in so much pain that they can’t help but present with obvious symptoms, such as walking on the backs of their feet (and cats are not designed to walk this way), and so on.
